What is DaVinci Technology? • Texas Instrument’s DaVinci Technology is a new software technology that has combined software, hardware, and development tools to form a digital signal processing (DSP) system that enhances digital multimedia.
What is Digital Video? • A type of video recording system that works by using a digital, rather than analog representation of the video signal. • Digital refers to a system that uses numbers, especially binary numbers for input, processing, transmission, storage, or display, rather than a continuous spectrum of values like the analog system.
What is DSP? • Digital Signal Processor • The study of signals in a digital representation and the processing methods of these signals.
Why was it developed? • To eliminate CODEC errors between different processors. • To bring digital video to the component level, enabling developers to introduce digital video to an application without requiring developers to program a single line of DSP code.
Multimedia CODECs • JPEG • MP3 • MPEG4 • AAC • WMV9/VC9 • H.263
Four Technological Areas • Optimized Application Software (API) • Development Tools • Hardware • DaVinci Technology Support System
Optimized Application Software (API) • Simplifies the specific low level details of video CODEC. • Enables developers to use the appropriate CODECs with no changes in their upper level layer application code. • Reduce external user work.
Hardware • Systems-on-a-chip (SoC)- functions of digital and analog signals integrated into a single chip. • Acts as a connector between the software and hardware of a processor.
Development Tools • Dual-core architecture that includes an ARM core and a high performance open-ended DSP platform.
Support System • Focuses on product from beginning stages to end.
Impact on the Future • Decrease time-to-market turnover of new products. • Easier to upgrade systems so there is no difference between two processors.
