  2. THE SPANISH ARRIVE IN mexico • Hernan Cortes arrives in the year 1519. • What did the native Americans observe when encountering Europeans for the first time?

  3. SPANISH CONQUER NATIVES • How did the Spanish conquer the natives so easily? • Diseases – natives had no immunity for European infections • Guns and Horses

  4. Life under Spanish colonial rule Peninsulares – top class of society who came from the Old World Criollos – Spanish who were born in the New World Mestizos – mixed Native and European ancestry Natives

  5. Europeans explore north america • WHY? • To find wealth and riches • ALSO, to evade religious persecution in Europe • The Protestant Reformation in Europe creates a religious rivalry between Protestantism and Catholicism

  6. SEARCH FOR A PASSAGE • England, France and the Dutch search for a Northwest Passage to Asia • They landed and explored parts of present-day Canada and the American northeast.

  7. Roanoke & jamestown • British colonies • Roanoke,1585 • First attempt failed as colonists returned home to Britain • Second attempt in 1587 also failed as colonists were never heard from or seen again. • Jamestown, 1607 • First permanent settlement in North America by the British

  8. PILGRIMS • Next wave of British colonists arrive to North America for a different reason: Escape religious persecution back in England

  9. MAYFLOWER COMPACT • VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!! • Pilgrims sign the Mayflower Compact while still on board their ship promising to obey laws passed for “the good of the colony” • This was a key step in the development of representative, democratic government in America!

  10. FUNDAMENTAL ORDERS OF CONNECTICUT • First written constitution in America • Described the organization of representative government in detail • Like the Mayflower Compact, it reflected a belief in democratic principles (beliefs)
