Space Exploration • Satellite • Any object that is orbiting or revolving around another object. • Can be natural or man-made. • Space probe • An instrument that is sent out of an earth orbit to gather information and then sends that info back to earth. Can become a satellite.

Sputnik • First Object in space. • Launched October 4, 1957 by the former USSR. • The size of a basketball and about 183 pounds. • U.S. answers with Explorer satellite
Race For Space • 1959 President Kennedy in an address to the nation proclaims that the U.S. will successfully send man to the moon and safely return them by the end of the decade. • Billions of dollars is allocated toward Science education and technology.
Project Mercury • Yuri Gargaran = 1st man (Russian) in Space • First U.S. manned space missions to put man in Space. • Alan Shepard = 1st U.S. Astronaut to space • John Glenn = 1st U.S. Astronaut to orbit the Earth.
Project Gemini • The second step in getting to the moon. • Major accomplishments • First space walk. • Linked two spacecraft together while in orbit.
Project Apollo • The moon missions. • Apollo 1—three astronauts die in a fire on the launch pad. • Apollo 11 the first manned spacecraft to land on the moon on July 20, 1969. • Neil Armstrong. • Last time we stepped on moon—Apollo 17 on December 11, 1972.
Viking Missions • Viking 1 launched August 20, 1975 and Viking 2 launched on September 9, 1975 Arrival: June 19, 1976 (Viking 1); August 7, 1976 (Viking 2) • Each one had an orbiter and a Lander. • First to land on another planet—Mars.
Voyager 1 & 2 • Voyager 2 was launched August 20, 1977 followed by the launch of Voyager 1 sixteen days later on September 5, 1977 . • Both went to Jupiter and Saturn • Voyager 2 continued on to Uranus and Neptune.
Magellan • Launched May 4, 1989, and arrived at Venus on August 10, 1990 • Mission was to map the surface of Venus. • Mapped 98% of the entire surface.
Galileo • Launched October 18, 1989. • First deep space probe to be launched by a space shuttle. • Galileo arrived at Jupiter in December 1995. • Released a probe into Jupiter to test its atmosphere. • Gathered info about the moons.
Pathfinder • Landed on Mars1997 • Robotic probe sent to Mars • Proved that there were innovative ways to land on Mars and that a rover could be deployed
Spirit and Opportunity • Landed on Mars in 2004 • Did series of test on Mars in two separate location to determine if water existed on Mars and if it still does today. • Ultimately is looking for evidence of life on Mars.
Challenger • On January 28, 1986, the shuttle orbiter Challenger and its seven-member crew were lost 73 seconds after launch.
Columbia • On February 1, 2003 at 8:59 a.m. the space shuttle Columbia is lost over Texas during re-entry.
