Our Staff • Mrs Winstanley - Class Teacher/Deputy Head Teacher • Miss Norris- Teaching assistant • Miss Tunstall- Teaching assistant mornings • Miss Web- Student teacher here until Christmas • Mrs Varley and Miss Christopher cover in Year 2 on Wednesdays • We look forward to getting to know you all and working together.
Year Two Topics • The Place where I live! • Fighting Fit • Explorers • The Farm Shop • Wind in the Willows • Buckets and Spades Subjects such as art, design technology, Science and history and geography are taught through these topics.
Behaviour • Very Important focus of Year 2 • Restorative Approaches- encouraging the children to think about how their behaviour affects others. • Rewards and Positive Behaviour Management • Sanctions- missed playtime and possibility of lunchtime reflection and completion of a think sheet. • (Reflections are rare in Y2)
Reading • We read 1:1 1x per week and then change books on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so please try to have completed books ready for changing on those days. We also read as a group and complete comprehension tasks throughout the week. • Please sign reading diaries every time. We place a high emphasis on reading and so run a rewards scheme whereby we count the number of reads at home and award certificates for 25, 50, 75 reads and then a book for 100. • Phonics cards and HFW flashcards will also be given at different times to support the Y2 curriculum and prepare the children for SAT’s • Comprehension is the most important part of reading. Please ask the children Q’s throughout the reading process. I will be sending home some examples of the types of Q’s that you could ask in the style of the SAT’s tests. • Reading is the best way to help your child to do well at school. We try to encourage the children to read their own books too and not just the school books. Please encourage your child to begin to read chapter books from authors such as Roald Dahl or books like Dirty Bertie, Horrid Henry etc If they are not up to that level of reading themselves then please share them with them as they provide such great language and ideas that they support not only reading development but also writing as well.
Reading • Reading books are colour banded to help us to asses and level the children. • The expected colour band for the beginning of Year 2 is turquoise. • The expected colour band for the end of Year 2 is White. For your child to achieve working at the expected level in their end of year SAT’s then they should be reading at white level. To be considered as ‘Greater depth’ they will need to be reading at Lime and above. • This guide will help you to see where your child sits currently. We will do our best to help them to progress through the reading scheme but the more you can support reading at home, the faster this progression will be. • Please don’t panic if your child is further behind on the coloured bands at the moment. We will be putting support and intervention in place to push all children forward and advance through the scheme.
P.E • Please provide school kits with labels in all items of clothing and footwear • PE Days- Tue and Thurs • P.E kits will be sent home at the end of a half term but just ask if you want them before that! • Thursdays PE may take place outside so please feel free to provide a hooded jacket or tracksuit, leggings or joggers for the colder months. • We will of course not be going out in the winter months.
Homework • First Half Term- Reading, Spellings and project books. I will send a grid of 6 different tasks for you to complete in an order that suits you. • Second Half Term- Maths, reading, Spelling and practice SAT’s Q’s. • Spring/Summer Term- Maths , reading, Spelling and project books • Will be sent home on Fridays to be returned on Mondays. Please encourage the children to complete all tasks neatly. • Spellings- sent home Monday for Friday test.
Snack Information • Milk- now chargeable, please see office if you haven’t ordered milk already. • Alternatives- water, flavoured water but no fizzy drinks please. • Children may bring an additional drink for throughout the day. • Toast and crumpets available- 20p per day. Please pay for the week on a Monday. A labelled envelope or money bag would be helpful if possible. • Fruit is available every day in class.
SAT’s • The children complete their statutory assessment or SAT’s in May. • Please avoid holidays during this time. • They will complete 2 reading comprehension papers, 2 maths papers and a spelling and grammar and punctuation test. • The tests are challenging and we work very hard all year to prepare for them. • I will be delivering a SAT’s information evening after Christmas during which I will show you sample papers and go through the tests and how to support your child in more detail.
Final Word • The children have made a great start and I am really looking forward to getting to know them even more. • We work hard in Year 2 but we also are very mindful of the fact that the children are just 6 years old and so we have lots of fun too! • We have a great set of staff and are always happy to help in any way that we can so if you need anything then please don’t hesitate to pop in and see any one of us. After school is usually better as mornings can be very busy! • We look forward to working with you and getting to know you too!
