Internet Use Just over a year ago the Australian Bureau of Statistics released this data relating to household use of information technology: The number of households with access to the internet at home has increased, reaching 7.7 million in 2014-15, representing 86% of all households and this is increasing. Households located in major cities were more likely to have internet access at home (88%) than those in remote or very remote parts of Australia (79%). The internet was most commonly accessed by desktop or laptop, followed by smart phones, followed by tablets. The rate of use increased with the level of education, and 93% of employed people used the internet compared to 70% of those not employed. There were 1.3 million Australian households without internet access at home and the main reasons given were: • no need – main reason given in both major cities and RRR areas • lack of confidence or knowledge and • cost. These statistics do not take account of homeless Australians.
