Combining sentences • SPI 0601.1.7 Identify within context a variety of appropriate sentence-combining techniques (i.e., comma used with coordinating conjunctions, introductory words, appositives, interrupters).
comma used with coordinating conjunctions • When you have 2 sentences that can be combined (or two ideas that you want to combine into one sentence) you can combine them by using a comma and a coordinating conjunction (F.A.N.B.O.Y.S.) Ex: John wanted to ask Emily to the dance. John was nervous. Becomes: John wanted to ask Emily to the dance, buthe was nervous.
Directions for game: • You are about to see some fortunes (like in a fortune cookie) that aren’t so great. In fact, we will call them mis-fortunes. When the mis-fortune appears on the screen, you need to copy it down. Then you will see a coordinating conjunction appear on the screen. You must add another phrase to the sentence AFTER the comma and coordinating conjunctions to make your fortune better. Ex: Your sister will spill her drink on your phone Coord Conjunction = so Your little sister will spill her drink on your phone, so your mom will buy you a new iPhone.

Now draw a line across your paper • For #7-10 (EXIT CARD!) you will get to pick your own conjunction
