  2. Racism: The belief that some ‘races’ are better than others Racial Discrimination: Treating people differently because of their race. Scapegoating: Blaming certain groups of people for problems in society Stereotype: An exaggerated and misleading view about a person or group Covert Racism: Behaviour that is secretly racist Overt Racism: Behaviour that is openly racist Ethnocentrism: Looking at things from only one cultural viewpoint and ignoring other ways of looking at the world Institutional Racism: Where the way an organisation (such as the police) works has the effect of discriminating against certain groups Racial Harrassment: Actions and language which are intended to harm people from different ‘races’ Diversity: Accepting that there is range of cultures and ethnicities within a society Can you match the key terms to the correct definition?

How much does ethnicity affect a persons life chances? • Can have a significant impact: • Ethnic minorities more likely to be victims of crime • Stephen Lawrence case revealed Institutional Racism in Criminal Justice system • Afro-Caribbean and Pakistani/Bangladeshi children underachieve at school • Afro-Caribbean people more likely to be unemployed (less qualifications and suffer from discrimination) • Afro-Caribbean people more likely to be in prison • Afro-Caribbean Pakistani/Bangladeshi people more likely to live in poor quality housing • But… Different ethnic groups will have different experiences • Class, Age, and Gender, and Place are also important
