NEW PTSA BUSINESS Joan Dykstra Advocacy Award PTAHC • Application Deadline: May 22, 2010 Joan Dykstra Advocacy Award is bestowed on an outstanding local PTA who has advocated on behalf of the children and youth in their community. The advocacy may be at the local school level, county level or state level. The PTA who receives this recognition will also be awarded $300 to use in their programs.
NEW PTSA BUSINESS Parent/Teacher Collaboration Award PTAHC • Application Deadline: May 22, 2010 Awarded to honor the work of parents and teachers working together to benefit students in one or more Howard County Schools. . $100 to the PTA A plaque A letter citing the group for their work sent to the PTA/PTSA, the school principal and the Department of Education Superintendent. Publicity in the FOCUS and submission of an award announcement to the Howard County local papers and the Baltimore Sun
NEW PTSA BUSINESS Summer Reading Initiative—Mrs. Warner Participation by current 5th, 6th, and 7th graders. Outreach to incoming 6th graders from Bryant Woods, Running Brook, and Clemens Crossing. Kids read books and send in postcards. Would like support from the PTSA for postcard stamps. REQUEST: 480 Postcard Stamps @ $0.29 = $139.20

Special appearances by Clifford the Big Red Dog. Friday, May 21st at 7:05 p.m. – Girl Scout Night. Bring out the whole troop to support Girl Scouts of America. A fireworks show will follow the game. Wednesday, June 2nd at 7:05 p.m. – The Mets will be in town as the Baysox play the Binghamton Mets. Friday, June 18th at 7:05 p.m. • Boy Scout Night. Bring out the whole troop to support Boy Scouts of America. A fireworks show will follow the game. Monday, June 28th at 7:05 p.m. – Twilight Night. Dress as your favorite Werewolf or Vampire and enjoy a night about the bestselling books by Stephanie Meyer.

PTSA BUSINESS Staff Appreciation • Nancy Glass and Jill Scott • PTA Teacher Appreciation Week, May 2-8 Principals Message—5/7/10 This week, during staff appreciation week, we have been treated like royalty by our wonderful PTSA. A wonderful group of parent volunteers served us lunch, desserts and other goodies throughout the week. We are truly grateful for your generosity and the culinary talents that were shared with us. On behalf of our entire staff, we want to thank the amazing WLMS PTSA!
PTSA BUSINESS Wilde Lake Middle School is first in County to use wireless netbooks in the classroom. Columbia Maryland, April 2010 - Students at Wilde Lake Middle School (WMLS) are now actively using 180 wireless Dell Latitude 2100 netbooks in classrooms. WLMS is hosting an Tech Open House durring the GT Enrichment Fair on May 13th. Sessions will include Netbooks 101 and a student discussion panel. WLMS is helping to lead the Howard County Public Schools in their implementation of a secure wireless internet networks and the use of net books by students. Upcoming Events May 13th 8:30-11am - Tech Open House and Student Panel discussions on netbook use May 13th 6-7pm - Open Classrooms - Introductory and Advanced Netbook Workshops - Open Classrooms demonstrate use of netbooks in Math, Science and English. Guide Helps Parents Inform Their Children About Online Safety • Published by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), "Net Cetera: Chatting with Kids About Being Online" offers parents practical tips to guide their children in navigating the online world. • As the guide notes, online means of interaction come with certain risks, including inappropriate conduct, contact, and content.
