We have just created a list of words that relate to the colours White, Red, Yellow, Brown and Blue. As a class, see how many words you can think of that remind you of the last 5colours… We now can see that colour can make us think of certain things like food, animals, people and natural environments. By thinking this way we can see how colour can make us think about certain things and certain words… Lime Green Crimson Dark Green Black Orange
Lemons Strawberries Sky Sunflowers Cold Taxi Fire Bananas Fire engines Blueberries Mountain Bluebird Happy Ladybug Ocean Chilli Ducklings Flag of Greece “On a sunny day my little brother and I bought two cold drinks…” Here is one way of telling a story… We know that Cuisenaire rods have different colours, but did you know they can help tell a story?
“My brother had a strawberry flavoured drink and I had an orange juice” “We both found a largetree and decided to sit under it drinking our cold drinks” “We both spent the day enjoying our drink under the shade of the tree. The end”
What other different languages can we think of? Telling stories using Cuisenaire rods can be a great way to learn new words and even learn a new language Others may want to learn because language is important to their own culture and identity People may want to learn a new language because they are interested in a specific culture Some of the languages taught using Cuisenaire rods include… Both children and adults may learn a new language for different reasons… Te reo Maori Hindu Pacific island languages Japanese English And many other different languages Image: http://knowledgebox.wordpress.com/page/8/ http://www.kealaleo.com/history.htm http://cmukindergarten.webs.com/cor.JPG

So what have we learnt so far? Colour can • help us think about certain things • because of their colour • help us tell a story to someone • help us learn new words • help people learn languages because it maybe important to their own culture or identity
