JOURNAL ENTRIES AT ELLIS ISLAND 10/08 FROM CAMILLE: “I HAVE GONE TO ELLIS ISLAND SEVERAL TIMES WITHOUT MUCH REGARD FOR THE HISTORY ...... THROUGH THE JOURNAL ACTIVITIES, I WALKED THROUGH ELLIS ISLAND WITH A WHOLE NEW PERSPECTIVE ……THE JOURNAL ACTIVITIES MADE ME THINK ABOUT WHAT DOCTORS, NURSES AND WORKERS HAD TO WITNESS. ….HELPED ME TO LITERALLY FEEL LIKE AN IMMIGRANT AND SEE AND FEEL WHAT THEY DID: AMBITIONS, FEARS AND DREAMS.” FROM SAMIA: “AS AN IMMIGRANT MYSELF, I REALIZE HOW MUCH EASIER MY EXPERIENCE WAS. I CAME COMFORTABLY ON AN AIRPLANE WITH GUARANTEED ENTRY AND NOT IN AN OVERCROWDED BOAT UNSURE IF THE OFFICIALS WOULD FIND SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME AND SEND ME BACK OR WORSE KEEP ME IN A HOSPITAL OVERLOOKING THE LIFE I COULD HAVE HAD.” FROM AMANPREET: "THE PICTURES AND QUESTIONS GIVEN PRIOR TO OUR TRIP HAD A GREAT INFLUENCE ON THE WAY I SAW ELLIS ISLAND. I FELT A LOT CLOSER TO THE IMMIGRANTS BECAUSE I UNDERSTOOD THEIR STORIES. SEEING THE ISLANDS THROUGH THEIR EYES GAVE A LOT OF MEANING TO THE BUILDINGS. THEY CONTAIN HISTORY, BEAUTY AND THOUSANDS OF EMOTIONAL STORIES.”

The corridor would seem endless and full of sadness. The immigrant had only one path they could take. A doctor would mentally prepare himself for the workload of the day. A walk outside on a beautiful day would calm him for the day ahead. The doctor could walk outside along any path he chose or he could walk inside, He had choices. NOT DRAWN TO SCALE
