Plessy v. Ferguson • The case started separate but equal laws. Decided by the U.S Supreme Court in 1896.
Jim Crow Laws • Legalize segregation between blacks and whites. • “Jim Crow,” is named derived from a character in a popular minstrel song.
Booker T. Washington • Wanted to work alongside with the whites. • He wanted Vocational Training.
W.E.B Du Bois • African American author. • Founder of the NAACP.
Marcus Garvey • He everyone to go back to Africa to establish our own culture away from the whites. • Convicted of mail fraud.
Pres. Truman and the Desegregation • Pres. Truman issued an executive order 9981. • The order brought an end to segregation in the military.
Brown v. Broad of Ed. • The case started by the establishing of immigration in schools. • Case ended May 17, 1954.
Montgomery Bus Boycott • It lasted for a whole yr. • Blacks car pooled to get around.
Freedom Summer • A campaign of the U.S, that registered African Americans to vote. • Organized by the COFO (Council of Federated Organization).
Martin Luther King Jr. • During the civil rights era he gave the I have a Dream speech. • Organized the march on Washington.
I Have a Dream Speech • He spoke in Washington D.C. at Lincoln Memorial. • It attracted millions of people.
Freedom Riders • Designed to test the laws against segregation to see if it works. • They rode interstate buses.
The Little Rock Nine • They integrated Little Rock Central High. • It took place in 1957.
Malcolm X He is the black nationalist and founder of the organization and civil rights movement. He promoted violence, but Martin Luther King Jr., promoted non-violence.
Black Panthers • Founded the Black Panther party in October of , 1966 for self-defense.
SNCC • SNCC stands for Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee. • It also emerge from a series of student meetings led by Ella Baker at Shaw University.
Greensboro Four • It took place at Woolworths restaurant. • The sit-in consisted of four black males who attended North Carolina A&T State University at the time
Civil Rights Act of 1964 • Outlawed racial segregation in schools public places and employment. • Signed by Lyndon Johnson.
Voting Rights Act of 1968 • This allowed African Americans to vote. • It was also signed by Lyndon Johnson.
Twenty Fourth Amendment • Prohibits states from conditioning the right to vote in federal elections on payment of a poll tax. • The amendment was proposed on August 27, 1962.
Watts Riots • The riots stared in 1965. • It caused 35 million dollars in property damage.
Swan v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Ed. 1971 • The case dealt with busting of students to promote integration in public schools. • In 1965 judge J. Braxton Craven ruled in favor of Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
