During the 1500’s, 1600’s and 1700’s a caste system developed in which the Europeans were the masters and the native Indians and black Africans were the slaves. • Eventually the races intermarried producing • Mestizo European-Indian parentage • Mulatto-African-European parentage developed in the Caribbean and Brazil. • Criollos-Europeans born in Latin America • These groups eventually experienced conflict with each other as well as conflicts occurred with the new immigrants. • Many Europeans came to American following WWI and WWII. Many Chinese and Japanese immigrated to Brazil.
Men are expected to be macho. • Women are generally subservient to men, but women have tremendous respect. They sometimes play the dominate role in the family.
Most Latin Americans value leisure more than work. Latin Americans have a different concept of time. They do not feel pressured to do things on a schedule. They are often late for meetings and put things off until the next day. They do not believe life should be run by a clock, but life is to be enjoyed.
90% of the people in Latin America are Catholic. • Before Columbus, the natives had their own gods just as the civilizations in ancient Africa, Asia, and Europe.
