  1. SAVeRS Selection of Appropriate Vehicle Restraint Systems Prof. Francesca La Torre, PhD, PE Coordinator of the SAVeRS Project Full Professor of Roads, Railways and Airport Engineering University of Florence Civil and Environmental Engineering Department francesca.latorre@unifi.it

  2. Cross-border funded Transnational Research Programme funded by Belgium/Flanders, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom

  3. SAVeRS Selection of Appropriate Vehicle Restraint Systems Subcontractor:

  4. Objectivesof SAVeRS The objective of the SAVeRS project is to produce a practical and readily understandable Vehicle Restraint System (VRS) guidance document and a user-friendly web-based tool that will allow the selection of the most appropriate solution in different road and traffic configurations for all types of VRS: safety barriers including parapets, crash cushions (including truck-mounted attenuators), terminals and transitions, motorcycle protection devices.

  5. Workplanof SAVeRS WP1 – DefinitionofParameters Gavin Williams (TRL) WP2 – InfluenceofParameters Robert Thomson (VTI) TK 1.1 Analysisof NRA methodologies (TRL) [withTCD, UNIFI, VTI, AIT, ZAG, BRRC] TK 1.2 LiteratureReview (TCD) [withTRL, UNIFI, VTI, AIT, ZAG, BRRC] TK 2.1 Analysisofseverityofincidents (AIT) [with UNIFI, TRL, VTI, TCD, ZAG] TK 2.2 Whole life costanalysis (VTI) [with UNIFI, TRL, AIT, TCD, ZAG] WP0 – Project Management Francesca La Torre (UNIFI) WP4 – Dissemination and Workshops BinePengal (ZAG) [withall] WP3 – Creationof the GuidanceDocument Francesca La Torre (UNIFI) TK 3.1 – Preparationof the Guideline (UNIFI) [with TRL, VTI, ZAG, AIT, BB] TK 3.2 – Validationof the VRS placementguidance (UNIFI) [with TRL, AIT, BB] TK 3.3 – Pilotapplicationto a project (BB)

  6. Timetableof SAVeRS December 31, 2014 January 1, 2013 Total Budget of 525 k€ (approx. 700 k US$)

  7. The expectedoutcome The Guideline will be structured in 5 sections: • Identification of the need for a VRS (barrier placement guidance):allow the user to identify if there is a need for a VRS and the LON; • Safety barriers (including parapets): provide guidance for selecting the most appropriate VRS, which is tested according to EN1317-2 will be provided in different road section configurations. • Crash cushions (including TMAs), terminals and transitions: this section of the guide allow to select the attenuators according to EN1317-3 and the Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) for which a European Technical Specification is still under development and that are currently tested according to the US NCHRP350 or the UK Highways Agency’s TD49/07. • Motorcycle restraint systems (MRS): this section of the guideline will provide a tool to identify where an MRS tested according to EN Technical Specification CEN/TS 1317-8 (“Road restraint systems Motorcycle road restraint systems which reduce the impact severity of motorcyclist collisions with safety barriers”) is required and the criteria to select the most appropriate MRS; • Recommendation for the implementation of the guideline by National Road Administrations.

  8. The expectedoutcome The selectioncriteria in the Guide willbebasedalso on life cycleprinciples The applicabilityof the Guide willbetested in a Pilot Project byBalfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering The Guide willbeimplemented in a user-friendlyweb-basedtool

  9. National standards ….. • Collect: • National standards • National guidelines • Available database from Road Authorities, police, research institutes, etc… • Categorize: • Which parameters are used for assessing the need and the type of VRS • Which approach are used for assessing the need and the type of VRS • Produce: • Data Matrix: which essential parameters will be analyzed in WP2 • Report part 1.1

  10. Data matrix Example of data matrix (not the actual matrix) One for the need identification and one for the VRS performance selection (for each VRS)
