Background • May 2012: CDPH Director, Dr. Chapman, accepts ASTHO Pres. Dr. Lakey’s invitation for California to participate in Healthy Babies Challenge • Goal: To improve birth outcomes by reducing infant mortality and prematurity in U.S. • Specifically: To reduce prematurity by 8% by 2014 (2009 data as baseline) -- 2009 California percentage of preterm birth: 10.4% -- 2014 target: 9.6%
Overall Objectives • Focus on improving birth outcomes as SHOs and state leadership teams work with partners on health and community system changes • Create a unified message that builds on the best practices from around the nation • Develop clear measurements to evaluate targeted outreach, progress, and return on investment

CDPH-MCAH Participation • Partnership between ASTHO and March of Dimes • CDPH Director, Dr. Chapman, signed a pledge to: • Publicly announce CDPH’s goal to reduce the rate of premature birth by 8% by 2014 • To the extent resources are available, initiate/support programs and policies that reduce preterm birth rate • Build wider awareness of CA’s prematurity rates and other related MCH indicators
Common Strategies • Reduction of elective deliveries <39 weeks • Increasing access to preconception and interconception care • Improvement of perinatal regionalization • Smoking cessation • Preventing SIDS/SUID • Expansion of access to 17-P
