Dealing Directly with Reality Habitual behavior “Nothing so needs reforming as other people’s habits.” Mark Twain “…still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.” Paul Simon One of our dominant presets is to avoid anything that requires effort, toil or pain. To solve any problem, we must start by finding and facing the facts. “Oh, would some power the gift to give us, To see ourselves as others see us! It would from many a blunder free us.” Robert Burns The “why” and “how” of using the Othello Principle as a self-examination tool to trouble-shoot rationalizations The Ownership Spirit® The OneGrand Key that Changes Everything Else

It’s a PC that is virtually without limits—and within five years I predict it will be the most popular form of PC sold in America.” Bill Gates “Microsoft employs thousands of the smartest, most capable engineers in the world… Microsoft’s Windows operating system and Office Suite still utterly rule their markets. “…the VP in charge of Office at the time decided he didn’t like the concept…and thought our efforts doomed. To guarantee they were, he refused to modify the popular Office applications to work properly with the tablet.” Dick Brass “Yet, America’s most famous and prosperous technology company no longer brings us the future.” Dick Brass, former Microsoft VP 2001! Dealing Directly with Reality Reality checklist 1. Acknowledge Annoyance 2. Identify Assumptions 3. Evaluate Assumptions 5. Project Forward 4. Consider Your Focus A preset bias against anything can make or break the whole experience for an individual and for a team. Am I entirely focused on my own interests? Am I giving any consideration at all to the greater good or the bigger picture? Look at the ramifications of your position through the lens of the future. It is an invitation to make sure you are dealing directly with reality rather than an unwarranted, unfounded reaction. Ask yourself, “What am I feeling right now? Am I… angry? Alarmed?” Hurt?” What assumptions have I leapt to that are triggering this emotion? Ask yourself to be scrupulously honest: “Are these assumptions logical? Are they fair and reasonable?” The Ownership Spirit® The OneGrand Key that Changes Everything Else
