Lower Total Cost Per Scan • The Canon imageFORMULA DR-C125 costs 77% less per scan* than the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500. Cost Per Scan in Cents Canon Fujitsu • Based on the unit’s suggested retail pricing, recommended daily scan volume, and warranty and • consumable coverage over a three-year period.
ISIS / TWAIN-Compliant = More Flexibility • The imageFORMULA DR-C125 is ISIS / TWAIN-compliant, allowing the scanner to connect with virtually any ISIS / TWAIN-compliant third-party application. • The ScanSnap S1500 comes with a proprietary ScanSnap-specific driver, thus limiting its ability to integrate with third-party applications to those that have been specifically designed to work with ScanSnap drivers.
Smaller Files Use Less Bandwidth • In similar* lab tests, the imageFORMULA DR-C125 created smaller file sizes than the ScanSnap S1500 for the majority of documents tested—a critical issue for IT professionals. • BLI’s Lab Test Report on the imageFORMULA DR-C125 gave it an overall rating of “VERY GOOD” for the file size section when compared with the competition, in contrast to the ScanSnap S1500’s rating of “GOOD,” which is one grade lower. • Although the Canon model and all other competitive models were tested at 200 dpi and 300 dpi, the ScanSnap S1500, because it lacks the ability to scan black-and-white documentsat 200 dpi, was tested at 300 dpi and 400 dpi for its black-and-white scan tests.
Smaller Files Use Less Bandwidth • Tested File Size (in Kilobytes) • The ScanSnap S1500, because it lacks the ability to scan black-and-white documentsat 200 dpi, was tested at 300 dpi and 400 dpi for its black-and-white scan tests. All other scan modes were tested normally (200 dpi and 300 dpi).
Customizable Scan Key • The imageFORMULA DR-C125 allows users to customize the Scan key for frequently used operations, which eliminates the need to access the driver with each scan. • The ScanSnap S1500 has a non-customizable scan key, forcing users to select a scan profile from the driver before each scan.
Longer Lasting Consumables = Less User Intervention The imageFORMULA DR-C125’s consumables consist of one feed roller and one retard roller, which both require replacement after about 100,000 scans. The ScanSnap S1500’s consumables (a pick roller and an assembly pad) last 100,000 and 50,000 scans, respectively. In the time it takes both Canon rollers to wear out, users of the S1500 will be replacing their second assembly pad. Plus, Canon’s roller replacement kit costs $52, while Fujitsu’s rollers are purchased individually: $20 for the assembly pad and $35 for the roller. That means Fujitsu users will spend $23 more than Canon users every 100,000 scans. Number of Scans per Consumable and Associated Cost 120000 $52 Total $75 Total 100000 $35 $20 Pick roller Feed roller Retard roller ADF pad 80000 60000 $20 40000 ADF pad 20000 0 imageFORMULA DR-C125 ScanSnap S1500
Easier Consumable Replacement Procedures The BLI lab test for the Canon imageFORMULA DR-C125 states that, “the procedure for replacing the feed roller is better than with some other units tested due to its clearly marked blue access cover [...] users open the front cover and the blue access cover, slide the roller to the right of the device and remove it” and…“the retard roller is just as easy to replace as the feed roller and is housed underneath a similar blue cover.” Whereas the report for the S1500 says, “the procedure for replacing the pick roller is more cumbersome than that for other workgroup units tested. Once the access cover is opened, users slide the side guides toward the middle of the scanner and squeeze the tabs on either side of the roller cover with both hands to remove. Once the roller cover is removed, users have to lift the copper coupling tab up, grab the roller shaft and remove the whole assembly.”
More Image Enhancements • The imageFORMULA DR-C125 offers image enhancement features such as background smoothing and color drop-out functionality—threepopular features the ScanSnap S1500 lacks. • The imageFORMULA DR-C125 also offers features such as Full Auto Mode and Auto Resolution Setting which simplify the process for adjusting imaging features while still generating quality output • BLI’s lab test evaluation of the imageFORMULA DR-C125 noted the unit’s competitive image processing features, which earned it an overall rating of “GOOD” for that category, while the S1500 was rated “FAIR” for its lack of basic features such as color drop-out.
Other Competitive Advantages • Does the scanner offer…
Advantages of the ScanSnap S1500 • And examples of how to combat them • 1. “The ScanSnap S1500 offers a larger ADF capacity than the DR-C125, helping to increase productivity.” Combat with… The significantly higher scan speed, coupled with the higher daily duty cycle of the imageFORMULA DR-C125, actually provides a bigger productivity boost than available with the S1500. For example, say an office needed to scan 200 pages—the maximum daily scan volume of the S1500— in one sitting. The imageFORMULA DR-C125’s 30-page ADF would scan all 200 pages in roughly 8 minutes*, while the S1500’s 50-page ADF would take 10 minutes*. This may not seem like much of an advantage until you factor in the extra 1,300 pages users can scan with the Canon unit in a single day thanks to its 1,500 recommended daily scan volume.
Advantages of the ScanSnap S1500 • And examples of how to combat them • 2. “The ScanSnap S1500 offers small dimensions: 6.2" x 11.5" x 6.3" versus 8.5" x 11.8" x 6.1" for the Canon scanner.” Combat with… What basic scanner dimensions fail to take into account is the exit path of scanned documents. Workgroup scanners like the S1500 output scanned documents onto the desktop. Plus, according to the S1500 specs, those dimensions don’t take “external attachments,” like the ADF and output trays, into account. With the imageFORMULA DR-C125’s U-turn paper path, all scanned documents are housed in the exit tray, significantly reducing the required scan space and the potential mess left after scanning several documents at once onto a user’s desktop.
Advantages of the ScanSnap S1500 • And examples of how to combat them • 3. “The ScanSnap S1500 offers encrypted PDF from the driver to secure documents.” Combat with… Users who wish to secure PDF documents may do so via Nuance eCopy PDF Pro Office, which is bundled with the imageFORMULA DR-C125 at no additional cost. eCopy PDF Pro Office offers the ability to add passwords with secure encryption and permission controls to PDF documents. Users can also automatically redact sensitive information via the solution’s Advanced Search tool—a feature not available in the ScanSnap driver, or the unit’s bundled software.
Advantages of the ScanSnap S1500 • And examples of how to combat them • 4. “The ScanSnap S1500 has a higher tested efficiency rate than the imageFORMULA DR-C125 when scanning multiple pages.” Combat with… The efficiency rate is the percentage of the rated speed at which the device operates. So while it is true that the S1500’s efficiency rate was about 108% while the imageFORMULA DR-C125’s efficiency rate was about 103%, this only means that the S1500 was able to exceed its rated 20-ppm speed by 8%, which still comes nowhere near the tested speed of the Canon scanner. The Canon still outperforms the Fujitsu scanner.
Advantages of the ScanSnap S1500 • And examples of how to combat them • 5. “The ScanSnap S1500 scans faster than the imageFORMULA DR-C125 when increasing the scan resolution.” Combat with… In BLI’s tests, the Canon scanner’s tested scan speed fell to just under 20 ppm while the Fujitsu scanner fell to just under 22 ppm, when scanning BLI’s multi-page test document with the scan resolution increased by 100 dpi. This works out to be an average difference of about .26 seconds per page between the imageFORMULA DR-C125 and the ScanSnap S1500—a miniscule advantage for the S1500. But given Canon’s higher suggested daily scan volume, the imageFORMULA DR-C125 will still outperform the S1500.
Advantages of the ScanSnap S1500 • And examples of how to combat them • 6. “Installing bundled software requires fewer steps with the ScanSnap S1500 than with the imageFORMULA DR-C125.” Combat with… While the Canon imageFORMULA DR-C125 offers Canon CaptureOnTouch, NewSoft Presto! BizCard, Nuance eCopy PDF Pro Office, PaperPort and OmniPage, the ScanSnap S1500 offers ScanSnap Manager, ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap 4.0, CardMinder and ScanSnapOrganizer. ScanSnap Manager is similar to Canon’s CaptureOnTouch in that it drives most of the everyday scan functions. ScanSnap Organizer is a light version of Nuance PaperPort, without nearly as many features. CardMinder and BizCard rival one another—as do ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap and Nuance OmniPage SE. But nothing in the ScanSnap’s arsenal matches eCopy PDF Pro Office, a PDF creation tool that gives users control over the look and feel of PDFs. Given the overall more robust nature of Canon’s software bundle, the extra clicks it takes to install it all is certainly justifiable.
Advantages of the ScanSnap S1500 • And examples of how to combat them • 7. “The ScanSnap S1500 has a lower total cost of ownership than the imageFORMULA DR-C125.” Combat with… When calculating the total cost of both devices over three years at their recommended daily scan volumes, the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 comes out to be $783* while the Canon imageFORMULA DR-C125 comes out to be $1,338*. But the key phrase in that statement is “at their recommended daily scan volumes.” If the ScanSnap S1500 was able to run as many scans per day as the Canon, it would cost $1,555 after three years of use. * Based on the unit’s suggested retail pricing, recommended daily scan volume, and warranty and consumable coverage over a three-year period.
In summation • The Canon imageFORMULA DR-C125’s advantages over the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 include: • Faster tested scan speeds* • Lower Cost per Scan • U-turn paper path • Scans longer-size documents • Handles a wider range of paper weights • Higher recommended daily scan volume • TWAIN-compliant software and drivers • Smaller file sizes in the majority of tests • Customizable Scan hard key on the control panel • Easier consumable replacement procedures • Productivity and ratings data quoted in this report is from BLI Lab Testing on both the • Canon imageFORMULA DR-C125 and the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500.
