  2. ser • The verb SER means “to be”. • It is an irregular verb, which means it’s conjugations should be memorized. • It is used to describe the following:

  3. Uses of ser – (Doctor acronym) • Date - (Hoy esjueves.) • Origin - (Yo soy de Francia) • Characteristic – (Éles alto) • Time – (Es la una de la mañana.) • Occupation – (Yo soy mecánico.) • Relationship – (Ella es mi amiga.)

  4. Conjugations of the verb ser • Nosotrossomos = we are • Ellos/ellas = They • Ustedesson = you all are • Yosoy= I am • Túeres= you are • Él/ella =He/she is • Ustedes = You are

  5. Servsestar • Although the verbs SER and ESTAR both mean “to be”, they are NOT interchangeable. • This means that you must learn the specific rules for the use of each verb.

  6. Estar • The verb estar also means “to be”. • It is used to indicate LOCATION. (Yoestoy en la clase.) • It is also used to describe EMOTIONS (Ella estátriste) and TEMPORARY/CHANGEABLE CONDITIONS(mi mamáestáenferma/La comida estácaliente). • To remember uses of estar, the acronym “PLACE” is sometimes used.

  7. Uses of estar – (place acronym) • Position – La casa estácerca de la escuela. • Location – Yoestoy en la clase de español. • Action – Ella estáhaciendo la tarea. • Condition – Mimamáestáenferma/La comida estáfría. • Emotion – Los chicosestántristes.
