Summary of the electron transport chain • Electrons travel down a chain of proteins from high to low energy • oxygen has the lowest energy and is the ultimate acceptor of electrons • hydrogen combines with molecular oxygen to form water • Series of oxidation/reduction reactions • Energy is released • Hydrogen is pumped to the inter membrane space • Proton gradient formed • Hydrogen moves back to the matrix side and released energy will convert ADP to ATP by oxidative phosphorylation/chemiosmosis
2 functions of membrane associated carriers • Carry electrons from the primary electron donor to oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor • Energize membrane to make ATP
Generation of proton motor force • As electron flows from one electron carrier to the next, the energy released is used to pump hydrogen ions across the membrane • As hydrogen flows back down its concentration gradient through ATP synthase, ATP is produced
