Natural light comes from the sun… Having light allowing us to see trees, hills, rivers, insects,animals, cars, boats. and even each other. The sun is a ball of energy which sends light to everything it sees, including earth. We use light to keep us warm, to generate power through solar panels, to grow plants for food and to have fun at the beach… Without light it would be very difficult for us to do all these things. When we use a torch, we notice the light shines in one direction … The sun sends light (or energy) to the earth. This means light can not bend and can only travel in a straight line. This is the same with the sun and how it shines on the earth… Because light travels in a straight line, only half of earth experiences light at one time. No matter which way we face the torch, the light will always shine in one direction… Let’s find out by using this torch… How does light travel? Light and how it travels is an interesting element to see and use. People have used light to do some amazing things Let’s take a look… With enough mirrors you can create a new path for the light to travel Reflection happens when light travels and hits a surface like a mirror. When this happens light bounces off the mirror and moves in another direction Reflection plays an important part of how light can travel

Let’s take a look at some other ways people have used light to do some interesting things. This would later be called a “Camera Obscura” Early scientists found you could create something unique by directing light through a small hole… The light from the top of the tree travelled downwards into the hole and light from the bottom travelled upwards making the tree appear upside down The unique part happened when the light shining through the hole projects an upside down image of a tree The hole directed light inside and on to the opposite wall Here are some examples of people creating a camera obscura inside their room… Early camera obscuras were made by first creating a dark room, making sure no light could shine through They then made one very small hole in the wall looking outside towards a tree The reason the tree appears upside down is because, as we learnt earlier, light travels in a straight line Image: http://www.alltopmovies.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/ProfessorFrink2.JPG

More and more people learned of the camera obscura technique and began using it for different reasons… Many artists started using the camera obscura because they could trace over the projected image and create an accurate and realistic drawing or painting. Over time the camera obscura got smaller and smaller. This meant artists could travel from place to place creating realistic paintings or drawings of different landscapes and people. As we have seen, light can help create some amazing things… Let’s recap on what we have learnt so far…
