TEENAGE SUICIDE • Second leading cause of death among college students; Third leading cause of death among youths age 15-24; Sixth leading cause of death among children age 5-14 • 500,000 teenagers try to kill themselves every year – 5,000 carry it out • Suicide rate has tripled among teen/youth since 1970. • Every hour and forty-five minutes another person commits suicide.

  3. WHAT CAN I DO? • Look for danger signs: Persistent sad or “empty” mood; Feeling hopeless, helpless, worthless, pessimistic and or guilty; substance abuse, disturbances in eating and sleeping patterns; withdrawal from family and friends, “You will be sorry when I’m dead”. • Do not Avoid talking about it.
