Factors that may lead to suspicions of abuse or maltreatment. Learning outcome(s): By the end of the session, all learners will be able to: Give an explanation of what child abuse or maltreatment means; Identify the different types of child abuse that exist in our society; as well as at least five signs and symptoms of each. Some of you should be able to: Apply knowledge and understanding of the different forms of abuse to a range of given scenarios. Some of you could: Could construct a pen portrait/ case study using information provided.

Signs and Symptoms • Signs are things that can be seen, heard or felt by touch. • Symptoms are signs that generally cannot be seen, heard or felt. They are more to do with feelings, such as someone’s body language or facial expression
Independent Research • Using the resources available to you… books, internet, leaflets and so on. You are to: • Define each of the different types of abuse; • Give at least five signs and symptoms of the stated type of abuse.

Extension Activity • Create one pen portrait or case study * of a given child with whom you have suspicions of potential maltreatment or abuse. You must identify key features which may be seen as potential evidence of abuse or maltreatment and state “how” and “why” these features can be seen as an indicator of suspected abuse or maltreatment. • * informal description of a person or a group of people focusing on specific key aspects of a person or a group such as facial features or behaviour. Pen portrait are used in health and social care settings to get a basic idea of key behaviours which could suggest abuse or neglect of a child or young person.
