  2. Why become involved? Family and community involvement can have a powerful and positive impact on student outcomes.

According to A New Wave of Evidence: The Impact of School, Family and Community Connections on Student Achievement, a research review published by the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory in 2002, students with involved parents, no matter what their income or background, are more likely to: • Earn higher grades and test scores, and enroll in higher-level programs; • Be promoted, pass their classes, and earn credits; • Attend school regularly; • Have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school; and • Graduate and go on to post secondary education.

  8. Scavenger Hunt • Take 5 minutes to find the geometric shapes on the handout. If you can’t find the shape, write an example of one. • Use this to create connections with mathematical terms and real world examples • Other Scavenger Hunts

  9. Summer Literacy Activities for ALL Students • Communicate to build listening and talking skills • Read to and with your child • Model being a reader and writer • Make playing with words fun (interactive journals, write notes, play 20 questions or I Spy…)

  13. Decade Activity • Take an index card that is located on your table • Decide which decade the song on your index card was orginated and go stand by the appropriate decade signs around the room • Discuss with others in your decade group if this is the correct decade for your song

  14. ProcessingLoop With the members of your decade group give at least two literacy and two math ideas you will take back to your schools to share.
