  3. Binder • Please leave papers in your student’s binder until we tell them to take them out. • The binder is the KEY to staying organized! Please help your student keep contents in the same order as on the arrangement sheet at the front of their binder. The homework pocket is the first divider for easy access

  4. For Your Information: • Norton Express Envelopes go home every Wednesday night. • Memos, PTA information, and graded work. • Return envelope on Thursday. • Sign Code of Conduct each week before Friday – these are kept in the page protector in the front of student binders.

  6. A Day in the Life of a 5th Grade Math Student Math Block 1. Problem Solving Warm-Up: Warm Ups - authentic and practical real life application 2. Lesson/Content from Mrs. Cooper Use of manipulatives and technology Textbook when appropriate Math Journaling 3. Guided or Independent Practice 4. Station Activities and Small Group Current content Drill practice MATH

  7. MathHomework Homework: -Will have most nights -No need to do more of what you already know, but math is a skill that needs practice!

Social Studies 1st 9 Weeks: Geography, Migration, Exploration and Settlement 2nd 9 Weeks: Desire for Independence, Revolutionary War and Constitution 3rd 9 Weeks: Revolutionary War and Constitution (con’t), Citizenship of a New Country, Westward Expansion, Causes and Effects of the Civil War 4th 9 Weeks: Causes and Effects of the Civil War (con’t), Industrialization, Free Enterprise Grades: 50% Interactive Workbook-Notes 50% End of Chapter assessments (open book/note)

Science 1st 9 Weeks: Safety & Scientific Process, Cycles (Water, CO2/O2, Life Cycles), Ecosystems 2nd 9 Weeks: Adaptations, Physical Properties of Matter, Force, Types of Energy, Science Fair Dec. 4 3rd 9 Weeks: Earth’s Energy Resources, Landforms 4th 9 Weeks: Space, Weather/Climate, STAAR Review, History of Science

Science Grades & Resources Grades will be taken on: journal entries, lab experiments, science current event summaries (1 per grading period), homework, assessments, classwork, Science Fair projects Resources can be found on my website, especially: Edmodo, STEMscopes, Study Jams, and various sites for finding current event articles

  13. Living the Writer’s Life • Viewing the world as a writer • Using a writer’s notebook to generate and collect ideas, stories, and try new techniques • Taking an idea through the writing process (pre-write, brainstorm, draft, revise, edit, publish).

  15. WordWork • High-Frequency Words • Spelling assessed through writing • Prefixes-Suffixes • Patterns • Spelling strategies • Encourage reading! It is the best way to improve spelling!

Reading – Our Year At A Glance 1st Nine Weeks - Genre Study, Focus on Fiction 2nd Nine Weeks – Critical Reading in Non- Fiction 3rd Nine Weeks – Exploring Drama and Poetry, Biography/Autobiography, Real World Historical Reading, Preparing for State Assessment 4th Nine Weeks – Author Study, Literature Circles Study, Focus Historical Reading

  17. Reading – Our Day At A Glance • Mini - Lesson/Content Time – Focus on Current Learning Objective (Whole Group, Guided and Independent Practice) • Independent Reading – Time for self selected reading, teacher conference and reading response in RRJ

  18. Reading – Our Requirements • Students must have an independent reading book in class each day. • Homework – Read 30 minutes each night and record in reading log.

  19. Homework • Some homework every night. • Math • Reading (30 minutes – 4 days) • Writing/Word Work • Science/Social Studies-Edmodo or STEMscopes • Unfinished Work • Homework should be written in the agenda and kept behind the homework divider in the binder.
