Survey of The National Archives Volunteers 2016Background: • The survey took place from 11th July to 31st August 2016 • 139 volunteers responded (+2 from 2015 survey) • 53 (38.1% ) volunteered onsite only • 83 (59.7%) volunteered remotely only • 3 (2.3%) volunteered both onsite and remotely. • 88 (68%) volunteered at least once a week. • Gender: 56% female vs 43% male • Age: 55% = 65-74 years old (+5) 20% = 55-64 years old (-4) 8% = 75+ (-8) 8% 45-54 years old. (+1) 4.7% = under 45.

  2. Overall satisfaction rate Key results • 93% rated overall experience as excellent or very good (+4) • 43.4% = excellent (-7.6) and 49.6% = very good (+10.6) • Only 1.6% rated their experience as poor.

  3. Benefits of volunteering – some comments “I find working at home using my professional skills as editor (now retired) therapeutic. Good to think that the end result is of use to TNA and to those who use it for research.” “Feeling that I'm 'giving something back', doing something useful.” “I enjoy the sense of history gained from reading original materials and the skills involved in deciphering and precise” “Simply being part of and helping a great institution.”
