  1. Check for Understanding Goal: Comprehension (I understand what I hear and read) Adapted by Donna L. Barrett and Patty Rieple

  2. Check For Understanding Why Do We Do It? When we read we must think about the story. Good readers stop frequently to check or monitor whether you understand what you have read.

  3. Check For Understanding How Do We Do It? Ask yourself “who” did you read about and “What” just happened. Stop often to check for understanding.

  4. Check For Understanding What do you do if you don’t remember? Go back and read again.

  6. Mr. Ratburn, Arthur’s teacher, has given homework! Write a story. 1. Have a beginning, a middle, and an end. 2. Use details. 3. Be creative.

  11. Check for Understanding Who was the main character? Where and When is the setting of the story? Where: school and home When: one day What happened in the story? Arthur had to write a story for his homework. The time he started a pet business.

  12. Return to the story. Stop after Arthur talks to Francine in the library.

  13. Check for Understanding Who did Arthur read his story to? (Name them in order.) What happened to his story? Arthur changed his story every time he read it to someone.

  14. Return to the story. Stop when Arthur wonders what to do with his story because it is due tomorrow.

  15. Check for Understanding Who were the characters? Arthur and his friends/classmates Arthur and his family Where Arthur talked to his friends at the Sugar Bowl about their stories, presents his story to his family What happened with Arthurs story? Arthur turned his story into a song and made a dance to go with it. His family was not impressed. Arthur was worried about his story.
