Semester Grades • Minor grades and major grades will be recorded as numbers in the grade book. Six weeks and semester grades will also be averaged and recorded on the report card numerically.Example: 80% 20%
HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS High school credits for students in grades 9-12 are awarded on a semester by semester basis. If a student fails the first semester of a full-year course and passes the second semester, the two semester grades will be averaged to determine whether the student has earned a passing grade for the year.Example: 65 (1st semester) + 75 (2nd semester) = 70 avg. Credit will be awarded for both semesters.

Class rank • Class Rank is based on the cumulative grade point average for grades 9-12. • A student’s GPA is derived by dividing the total number of grade points by the number of semester courses attempted. • Junior ranks will be determined in early October. Sophomores in mid-late October will be updated after each subsequent semester.

The Benefits of AP Courses AP courses can be challenging, but it’s work that pays off. • AP courses are often the most interesting and fulfilling courses a student takes in high school. • AP teachers are among the most prepared, dedicated, and inspiring teachers at their schools. • Students develop confidence, and learn the study habits and time management skills essential for success in college.

What Are AP Courses Like? AP courses typically demand more of students than regular or honors courses. • Classes tend to be fast-paced and cover more material than typical high school classes. • More time, inside and outside of the classroom, is required to complete lessons, assignments and homework. • AP teachers expect their students to think critically, analyze and synthesize facts and data, weigh competing perspectives, and write clearly and persuasively.
How Can Parents Help Support Their Children? • Encourage time management. • Remind them to prioritize. • Recommend they form study groups. • Designate specific areas for homework and studying. • Remind them to turn off all electronic devices.
AP Exams • AP Exams are administered by schools worldwide on set dates each May. Exams this year will be from May 6 – May 17, 2013. • Exams usually last around three hours. • Each AP Exam contains: • Multiple-choice questions • Free-response questions (essay, problem-solving, oral response)
Tips on how to balance school and activities: • Being involved is important! • Every student must determine the right combination of courses and activities. • Appropriate choice of course level is key! balance
hOMEWORK • Expect your child to have homework every night. • BE CONCERNED – No books, no homework, no assignments, no tests to study for, etc. • Monitor study time • E-mail teachers • Check teacher websites • Call the teacher if you have questions • Check parent portal and online grades

End of course (EOC) Test The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STARR) is the new state assessment program that begins in spring 2012. STAAR will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) that has been in place since 2003 and includes 12 end-of-course (EOC) assessments for students in grades 3 through 8 and 9th graders who entered high school for the first time in 2011-2012.
