  1. One of the ancient titans Cronus Gaia was not happy that so many of her children had been locked up in Tartarus, so she asked the 12 Titans if they would help her out. Only Cronos was willing. Gaia gave him a sickle with which to castrate his father. Cronos obliged. Once castrated, Ouranos was no longer fit to rule, so the Titans awarded the rule to Cronos. Cronos freed the Hecatoncheires and Cyclopes, but then re-imprisoned them.

Atlas also was sometimes named the father of the Hesperides (Hespere, Erytheis, and Aigle), whose mother was Hesperis. Nyx is another listed parent of the Hesperides.
