Adjectives • Adjectives are words that describe nouns. • They agree with the nouns they describe in number AND gender • Example gender: Marc est grand et Anne est grande aussi. • Example number: J’ai les yeux verts
Adjective Agreement Rules • TO MAKE ADJECTIVES FEMININE • In most cases add an ‘e’ to the masculine form of the adjective • DO NOT add ‘e’ if adjective ends in unaccented ‘e’ • Jeune -> jeune • ADD an ‘e’ if the adjective ends in an accented é • Agé -> agée • Common Changes for feminine: If it ends in… • Eux -> euse on -> onne • If ->ive en -> enne
Irregular Feminine Forms • Some adjectives just have irregular feminine forms that you must memorize. • Cher…chère = expensive / dear • Long … longue = long • Blanc … blanche = white • Gros … grosse = fat • Gentil ….gentille = kind
Adjective Agreement Rules • TO MAKE ADJECTIVES PLURAL • To make adjectives plural add an ‘s’ to either the masculine or feminine form • Do not add a ‘s’ if the adjective ends in an ‘x’ • Sérieux -> sérieux • Do not add a ‘s’ if the adjective ends in s • Gros -> gros • Adjectives must ALWAYS agree with the nouns they are describing • Must agree with gender first and then number • Adjectives usually go after the noun they describe
Adjectives that don’t change! • Some adjectives like cool, chic, orange and marron never change form in the feminine or plural • J’ai les yeux marron. • Les profs sont cool. • La mère de Mathieu est très chic.
CLASS WORK • Write the following into French • He is a kind friend. • They (masc.) are smart. • You are happy. • She is a cute friend. • We are young.
Beau, Nouveau and Vieux • Beau, Nouveau and Vieux have irregular formations.
ADJECTIVE PLACEMENT • Adjectives come after the noun they describe unless the description is about beauty age, goodness or size • BAGS = if it describes the BAGS then the adjective goes before! • Beau, nouveau and vieux are part of BAGS • Examples • Marc est un bel ami. -> describes goodness • Marc est un ami sérieux. -> doesn’t describe any of the BAGS
