  2. Nonaggression Pact • Remember….. Hitler has taken the Rhineland, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. Poland is next. • France and Britain promise to protect Poland • Hitler signs a deal with Stalin • Agree to not attack each other and divide up Poland • Germany doesn’t have to worry about a two-front war

Blitzkrieg • September 1st, 1939: German air force begins bombing Poland • Nazis use Blitzkrieg (lightening war) war strategy • Use fast tanks and powerful aircraft to surprise the enemy • September 3rd, 1939: Britain and France declare war on Germany • Nazis defeat Poland in three weeks, Soviet Union takes part of eastern Poland

  6. The Phony War • Britain and France wait for Germany to make the next move • Hitler takes Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania • April 1940: Hitler attacks Denmark/Norway • Wants to build bases to attack Britain • Spring 1940: Germany takes over Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Belgium

Map Assignment (pg. 744) • Label (use pen) and color the following countries (use different colors): Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet Union • Use your timeline from Tuesday to draw in the important dates • On the back of the map answer the following questions: • 1. Why do you think that countries in Europe let Hitler expand without declaring war on Germany? • 2. Why do you think the United States failed to intervene in Europe during this time period?
