  1. Computer Hardware A General Overview

  2. Power Supply • The “heart” of the computer. • Sole purpose is to distribute power to other hardware. • Measured in W (watts). • Computer won’t boot if wattage is too low. • Failure usually attributed to fan. • Replacing power supply can fix many broken computers. • Connects to each major component individually, thus requiring multiple connectors and wattage specifications.

  3. CPU: Central Processing Unit • The “brain” of the computer. • Sometimes has memory, but stores no information long-term. • Measured in MHz or GHz (Megahertz/Gigahertz), which equates to processing speed. • Single or multiple cores (more cores means more “thinking” at one time).

  4. RAM Sticks: Random Access Memory Sticks • The “short-term” memory of the computer. • Store no information long-term. • Measured in KB, MB, & GB (Kilobytes, Megabytes, & Gigabytes). • Removable and usually expandable, meaning multiple slots available for more sticks. • Affect the Computer’s processing speed.

  5. Graphics Card • Own CPU, RAM, &, sometimes, fan. • Connects to monitor, TV, and/or projector displays. • Internal processing speed determines quality of picture and video on display. • Some can support more than one display at a time. • Some have inputs for video cameras.

  6. Hard Drives • The “long-term” memory, or storage, of the computer. • Measured in bytes (KB=1024 bytes; MB=1024 KB; GB=1024 MB; Terabyte, or TB=1024 GB) • Internal or external. • Must scrub to truly delete information. • Partitions create multiple virtual drives. • Have greatest evidentiary value.

  7. Optical Drives • ROM (read only memory) • Also measured in bytes (GB being the highest yet) • Read and/or burn CD’s, Minidisks, DVD’s, or Blu Ray discs with a LASER. • Have no memory in and of themselves – need disk to function. • Information on disks typically lasts for many years, depending on physical condition.

  8. Other Memory Storage Devices: From Most to Least Common Memory Cards Tape Drives Floppy Disk Drives Thumb/USB/Flash Drives Zip Drives Jaz Drives External Hard Drives
