HOMEWORK CHECK • Take out your homework from last class and have it out on your desk. • While I come around to check it, discuss the questions on the handout I just gave you with your group members. Make sure you’re sitting with them. • Then, fill in the table on the sheet.
Argumentative WritingWhat is it? • Take a minute to write down your own definition of argumentative writing. Be ready to share your answer!
Argumentative Writing • The goal of argumentative writing is to persuade your audience that your ideas are valid, or more valid than someone else’s. • The Greek philosopher Aristotle divided the persuasive appeals into three categories – ethos, pathos, and logos.
Ethos, Pathos, LogosWhat do they mean? • Talk within your table groups about what these mean. Be ready to share your answers in a couple of minutes!
Now let’s watch a short video … • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAsxyffBqm0
Now turn to your shoulder partner… • Define ethos, pathos, and logos to your shoulder partner. • If you finish early, try to come up with examples of what ethos, pathos, and logos may look / sound like in a statement.
Ethos, Pathos, Logos • Ethos – credibility, character • Pathos – emotion • Logos - logic
Arguing with Aristotle Email • With a partner or by yourself, color code the sentences in the email. Use your notes to help you! • Be ready to discuss it in about ten minutes!
HOMEWORK • Write me a letter using ethos, pathos, and logos attempting to persuade me not to give your homework over Thanksgiving break. • The effectiveness of your letters will determine whether I will give you homework over break.
