What are cognates? • Cognates – are words in two languages that are spelled, pronounced, and written the same or very similar. • Cognates also most times have the same meaning.
Identical Cognates: English Spanish • Tornado Tornado • Radio Radio • Chocolate Chocolate • Pizza Pizza
Cognates with minor spelling changes: English Spanish • Class Clase • Animals Animales • Tiger Tigre • Artist Artista
False Cognates: • English Spanish • Pie Pie • Embarrassed Embarazada
Cognate activities for the class: • When reading aloud to the class, ask the students to raise their hand when they think they have heard a cognate word. The class will then discuss the word. • When students read by themselves ask them to write down on a sticky note the cognates that they have encountered while reading the text. The sticky notes will then be placed in a class chart. The class will review the new cognates at the end of class.
Benefits of becoming aware of cognates • When students become aware of cognates, they use cognates in their first language to guide them in the second language. • The student’s vocabulary expands rapidly.
