  2. Reading Quiz The deliberate and systematic killing of an entire people is known as this. Kristallnacht is also known as this. Jews, gypsies and other unwanted people were sent to these places to die. The systematic killing of Jews, gypsies, and other people under Hitler’s orders is known as this.

Agenda/Topics To Be Covered The students will describe the response of the U.S. to the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939 by summarizing the events that brought the U.S. into conflict with Germany Announcement: Chapter 16 Test Next Tuesday Drill: Read One American’s Story on page 559 and answer the following: 1. What reasons did President Roosevelt offer for wanting to remain neutral? 2. Did he think it would be easy to maintain that neutrality?

America Moves Toward War Ch. 16 Section 4 pgs. 559-565 Moving Cautiously away from Neutrality FDR proclaimed neutrality as Germany swept across Europe Sept 8, 1939-FDR called special session of Congress to revise Neutrality Acts FDR asked for a “cash and carry” provision best way to keep U.S. out of war passed revised version which put “cash and carry” into effect

The Axis Threat Japan, Germany, and Italy signed the Tripartite pact to form the Axis powers in 1940 Purpose of pact to keep the U.S. out of war If U.S. attacked one country, the other would come to their defense-causing a 2 ocean war June 1940, U.S. sent Britain 500,000 rifles, 80,000 machine guns, 50 old destroyers for leases on British military bases Building America’s Defenses 18 countries had bigger armies than the U.S. Defense spending increased Peacetime military draft-Selective Training and Service Act: 21-35 year olds Roosevelt re-elected to a 3rd term

The Great Arsenal of Democracy The Lend-Lease Plan Britain ran out of cash Lend or lease arms to countries whose defense was vital to the U.S. Passed in 1941 Hitler attacked Russia on June 22, 1941 Soviets used a scorched –earth approach and U.S. lend-lease German Wolf Packs Hitler sent U-boats to prevent lend-lease from operating Germans sank 1.2 million tons of British shipping between April and May 1941 U.S. authorized in June 1941 to protect lend-lease shipments and fire on German U-boats
