The Periodic Table

Discover the fascinating patterns and properties of the periodic table! Learn how Dmitri Mendeleev arranged elements by atomic mass and published the first periodic table. Explore the vertical columns (groups) and horizontal lines (periods) that indicate the number of valence electrons and electron energy levels. Understand the distinction between metals, non-metals, and metalloids. Test your knowledge with a mini quiz!

  1. 8th Grade The Periodic Table

  2. Dmitri Mendeleev • Discovered that patterns appeared when elements were arranged in order of increasing atomic mass. • He published the first periodic table.

  3. Periodic Table • Made up of elements • Arranged by similar properties

  4. Groups or Families • Vertical columns on the table – indicate # of valance electrons...number yours now! • Elements have similar properties

  5. Groups or Families (cont) • Group 1-Alkali Metals • Group 2 Alkaline Earth Metals • Groups 3-12 Transition Metals • Groups 13 -16 – Named by top element in each group

  6. Groups (cont) • Group 13-Boron Family • Group 14-Carbon Family • Group 15-Nitrogen Family • Group 16-Oxygen Family • Group 17 – Halogens • Group 18 – Noble Gases

  7. Periods • Horizontal line of elements • Arranged by number of electron energy levels • Each period has the same number of shells. Text

  8. Energy Level Example • Lithium (Period 2) – only valence electron shown

  9. Metals, Non Metals, & Metalloids • Elements separated by zigzag line. • Left of line are metals • Right of line are non-metals • Elements on either side of zigzag are metalloids.

  10. METALS • Elements on the LEFT side of the periodic table; have a shiny surface and are good conductors of electricity

  11. NON METALS • Elements on the RIGHT side of the periodic table; dull and are not good conductors of electricity

  12. METALLOIDS • Elements that are to the LEFT AND RIGHT of the zigzag line; have some characteristics of metal and non metal

  13. Periodic Table Mini Quiz...you may use your notes. Directions: Get out paper and answer the following questions.

  14. Answers!!! • 1. Alkali metals • 2. Cl, F, Br, I • 3. Eight, except Helium which has only 2 valence electrons. • 4. Number of valence electrons. • 5. They are the same. • 6. The number of shells. • 7. Either side of the zigzag line on the periodic table. • 8. To separate the metals from the nonmetals. Text
