WP5 - TASK 2 Near real-time determination of the earthquake finite-fault source parameters and models, based on GPS and strong motion data Alessio Piatanesi alessio.piatanesi@ingv.it MARsite kickoff meeting December 19-20, 2012, Istanbul
Partners involved INGV, KOERI, GFZ, BRGM, IU Relevant deliverables D5.3 - Performance assessment of finite-fault inversion codes in the Marmara configuration Delivery date: 30 D5.4 - Near real-time estimation of most relevant earthquake source parameters Delivery date: 30
Main topics (as in the DoW): 1 • “Analyzing geodetic and seismic data together using a Kalman • filter will provide precise and true broadband record of • displacements across the entire frequency range, including the • static component. These analyses can be done in near real time • and are particularly suited for capturing near-source large • Earthquakes.” • Partners involved: ? • “In order to improve rapid ground-motion simulations in case of • large earthquakes in the Marmara region, a new tool for rapid • reconstruction of the rupture process of large earthquakes using • near-field strong-motion and high-rate GPS data will be developed.” • Partners involved: ?
Main topics (as in the DoW): 2 - “The array-seismological method will be extended by taking into account empirical or synthetic Green’s functions. Aim of such method will be providing a fast and reliable estimation of most relevant source parameters (e.g. moment magnitude, fault size, rupture duration, slip centroid)…” Partners involved: ?
Main topics (as in the DoW): 3 • “Two finite-fault inversion programs will be developed, tested and • compared. The first code implements a linear technique to invert • strong motion and GPS data: it is very fast and produces a model • of the earthquake rupture process in term of heterogeneous slip • distribution, uniform rise time and constant rupture velocity.” • Partners involved: INGV, …? - “The second code is based on a simulated annealing technique: it is slower than the former, but it may handle very complicated rupture model with heterogeneous slip, rise time and rupture velocity, other than several kind of source time function.” Partners involved: INGV, …?
Main topics (as in the DoW): 4 The performance of the above codes will be assessed in term of accuracy of the solution and quickness of the execution run through several synthetic tests, specifically designed for the Marmara Sea tectonic setting and observational network. Partners involved: INGV, …?
Coordination and Management: 1 I would like to propose to all partners a task sheet to fill. The task sheet will contain the following information: 1) Name of the institution, contact person, participants. 2) For each contribution to the task: • Title of the contribution • Short description (200-300 words) of the work • (already done, planned in the short, mid and/or long-term). • Problems/gaps that, in your opinion, may be faced/filled more • easily by other partners. - Row estimation of the delivery date of results. - Planned or potential collaboration with other partners
Coordination and Management: 2 • I will send a template of the task sheet to all partners. • I will collect the task sheets sent back by each partner and • merge the contributions into a single document. • To come out potential interactions and/or collaborations, • I will try to put together or link contributions that may take • advantage by a cooperative effort: • - similar/complementary numerical techniques • - sharing of data input • - common case study • - strength of a partner in facing a particular problem - I will distribute this document to all partners.
Coordination and Management: 3 • Schedule for task sheet: • - Send the task sheet template to partners: beginning of January • - Send back to me the task sheets: end of January • Merging the contributions and distributing to all partners: mid of February
