How would you define it? • Stress is a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilize. • Is stress always a bad thing?
Fight or Flight: The Origins of Stress • Hormones help us to run faster and fight harder. They increase heart rate and blood pressure, delivering more oxygen and blood sugar to power important muscles. • As well, these hormones focus our attention on the threat, to the exclusion of everything else. • All of this significantly improves our ability to survive life-threatening events.
Power, but little control... • Unfortunately, the mobilization of the body for survival also has negative consequences. In this state, we are excitable, anxious, jumpy and irritable. This reduces our ability to work effectively with other people. • With trembling and a pounding heart, we can find it difficult to execute precise, controlled skills. We find ourselves more accident-prone and less able to make good decisions.
The Positive Effects of Pressure • One example of this is where sportsmen and women flood their bodies with fight-or-flight adrenaline to power an explosive performance. • Another example is where deadlines are used to motivate people who seem bored or unmotivated.
Entering a State of "Flow" • When you are operating in your “area of best performance”, you are normally able to concentrate, and focus all of your attention on the important task at hand. When you do this without distraction, you often enter a state of ‘flow’. This involves “being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The world falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you're using your skills to the utmost". • Describe a situation where you have been in ‘flow’
How Does Stress Effect my Life? • Behavior changes - take up smoking, drinking • Heart attack – in serious situations • Immune system health • Cancer • Headaches • Indigestion • Mental health – depression • Damages relationships and careers.
Managing Stress • Exercise • Action-oriented: In which we seek to confront the problem causing the stress, changing the environment or the situation; • Emotionally-oriented: In which we do not have the power to change the situation, but we can manage stress by changing our interpretation of the situation and the way we feel about it; and • Acceptance-oriented: Where something has happened over which we have no power and no emotional control, and where our focus is on surviving the stress.
