Objective 1/3 To be able to explain the features of STM and the concept of ‘chunking’
STM QuizUse Psychological Terms • What are the two main (limited) features of the STM? • What is the minimum number of chunks a person can hold on average? • What is the maximum number of chunks a person can hold on average? • What happens to information in the STM if there is no more space for it? • What happens to information in the STM after 15-20 seconds if attention has not been paid to it?
STM QuizAnswers • What are the two main (limited) features of the STM? Limited duration and limited capacity • What is the minimum number of chunks a person can hold on average? 5 (7-2) • What is the maximum number of chunks a person can hold on average? 9 (7+2) • What happens to information in the STM if there is no more space for it? displacement • What happens to information in the STM after 15-20 seconds if attention has not been paid to it? decay
recognise capacities duration rehearsed transfer Some words to help you with the fill in sheet
Objective 2/3 To know the two theories of forgetting
DISPLACEMENT When the memory store runs out of SPACE because it is overloaded. DECAY When a piece of information is not rehearsed enough or not at all. It happens when we don’t use, or stop using the information. Theories of Forgetting Can you think of examples of each?
DISPLACEMENT When the memory store runs out of SPACE e.g. Waiter has a long list of drinks, but the earlier ones are ‘shunted out’ by the ones at the end of the order. DECAY When a piece of information is not rehearsed enough or not at all e.g. If we learn French for an exam but never actually practise it or need it afterwards, it decays. Theories of Forgetting
Objective 3/3 To carry out some research and be familiar with the terms: Hypothesis Independent variable Dependent variable
Independent Variable (IV):Something the researcher changes or manipulates Dependent Variable (DV): Something that is measured to see if it has changed (after the IV is manipulated)
Task:Can you identify the IV and the DV? • Students will yawn louder before school than after school. • Cats will jump higher to the sound of a horn than the sound of a rattle. • Belgrave High Girls will score more goals at the football match than at the netball match. • Parents will shout less at Parents’ Evening than at sports’ day. • Teachers will dance more at Christmas than at Easter.
