  2. Summary • Mexico basically middleman. • Really kicked off after the arrest of Miguel Gallardo, who dominated the business, in 1989 because gangs fought over control. • Rival gangs fought each other ever since.

  3. Summary II • Numerous deaths and injuries, including civilians. • Corruption within the police. • 2006-President Calderon decided to put an end to drug trafficking by sending 6,500 troops to Michoacan. • Fighting still going on.

  4. Seizures • Over 62,000 weapons (AR-15s, AK-47s, grenade launchers, armor piercing snipers) seized since 1996 • Countless tons of drugs-price of cocaine went up 24% in 37 states. • 270 private plans confiscated • 10m submarine

  5. Recent News • US gave Mexico nearly $200 million to fight the war against drugs. • 8 new bodies were found in Michoacan, a violence ridden city in Mexico. • Police force increased, 25,000 troops stationed at Michoacan.
