  4. Manifest Destiny • Belief that people were destined to expand across the whole continent • Belief held by democrats in 19th century • John O’ Sullivan used the phrase in newspaper

  5. Famous Battles • Santa Fe- August 18th; Kearny takes Santa Fe, NM • Monterrey- September 21st-23rd,; Taylor overcomes Pedro de Ampudia • Buena Vista- February 22nd, 23rd ; Zachary Taylor beats Santa Anna
