Working with Irrigation Entities in Idaho Presented by Linda Davis Date March 2012
Identify areas that need to be updated • Assess needs of NHD users • Educate and Inform • Work with local sub-stewards to get best information • Provide tools and data • Follow up and support
Identify areas that need to be updated • Many areas represented well with NHD • Some areas have had changes to Hydrography since initial line work was collected • Urban Areas • Areas affected by agriculture and water delivery

Assess needs of NHD users • National and regional users want updated line work for a variety of applications. • Water accounting • Fish passage • Flooding • Modeling • Local water managers need updated line work to help manage water delivery, notify customers of problems in water delivery and canal maintenance.
Educate and Inform • Worked with BOR to get GIS software to Irrigation Entities • Met with Irrigation Entities and told them about the NHD and how it can be used to assist them • Provided Irrigation Entities with maps of hydrography with Imagery within their service area. • Worked with Irrigation Entities to show them tools that work with NHD – HEM tool
Work with local sub stewards to get best information • Obtain contacts of interested sub-stewards (irrigation entities) • Work within their time schedule • Get any existing base material – old service maps, or diagrams • Photo revise NHD for area of interest with 1 meter NAIP (2006, 2009, 2011)
Provide tools and data • Provide Irrigation entities with maps of service area • Provide tools that will allow them to edit hydrography • Online editing tool • Arc based tool
The Arc Based Tool • Was used by the Burley Irrigation District, the Northside Irrigation District, American Falls Reservoir District #2, the Big Wood Canal Co and Water District 37. • The Northside Canal Co. uses the line work along with their head gate information to improve customer service response time. (A customer comes in with a problem at their head gate, can be traced upstream and correct ditch rider notified. • American Falls Reservoir District #2/Big Wood Canal Co. are using the line work to help plan system projects including ditch to pipeline conversions. They are also using the line work with a student GPS data collection project that involves collection of head gate information. • The HEM tool was used by the Burley Irrigation District to attempt to link parcel centroids to the NHD
Follow up and support • Gotomeeting (web based like webex) • In house training • HEM training • General GIS support
