What is BREEAM In-Use • An environmental assessment method for existing (in-use) non-domestic buildings. • A standard (BES5058), easy-to-use assessment methodology and independent certification process • Improves environmental performance and building management • Identifies parts of a property portfolio that are under performing and may require refurbishment. • Ongoing assessment method to encourage continual improvements

BREEAM In-Use Statistics • Statistics available at www.breeam.org/inuse. Statistics include: • Certificated by country • Age of assets certificated • Asset types certificated • Ratings by age of building
Assessment and certification options BREEAM In-Use can be self assessed and/or independently certificated at the 3 levels: • Part 1 – Asset • Part 2 - Building Management • Part 3 – Occupier Management
Weightings and Star Ratings*: • Each issue is weighted differently • BREEAM In-Use provides Star Ratings which vary between 1-6. <10% UNCLASSIFIED - >10% ACCEPTABLE >25% PASS >40% GOOD >55% VERY GOOD >70% EXCELLENT >85% OUTSTANDING
What are the benefits of certification • Independent third party confirmation of the environmental impact of asset and/or management systems. • Publicise certification by displaying a BREEAM In-Use certificate • Concise and authentic data to promote improvements to assets. • Annual Certificate renewals to reflect current practices and encourage improvement.

Features of the BREEAM In-Use Online System • BREEAM In-Use Online Questionnaire • Automated scoring and certificates • Online registration and payments • BREEAM In-Use licensed Auditors can view detailed assessments • Collection of some of the data for audit can be conducted remotely • Communication record between Client and Auditor
How to apply • Go to www.breeam.org/inuse • Select link > Register • Once registered, the Login link can be used to access the system
Client training and examination • Training is required for all users to understand the core principles of BREEAM In-Use and the online system. • Examination is required to access the full BREEAM In-Use question set; Clients are only required to successfully complete the client exam once. • Training and examination are located at www.breeam.org/inuse via the Scope and Training page. • If a client has appointed an Auditor to act on their behalf, they are not required to undertake the training and examination.
What is the role of a BREEAM In-Use Auditor? • If the client (Asset Owner or Tenant) decides to proceed to full certification, their pre-assessment must be audited by a licensed BREEAM In-Use auditor.
Current qualifications required to become a BREEAM In-Use Auditor • BREEAM Assessor • BRE Global Fire Risk Assessor • Exclusive membership BRE Global Energy schemes. Note: We are currently in the process of expanding the entry requirements to become a BREEAM In-Use auditor. Entry requirements will include facility management experience and building knowledge/experience.
How to become a BREEAM In-Use Auditor • Check the BREEAM In-Use requirements via the Scheme Document SD096, which is downloaded online www.breeam.org/inuse • Attend a 1 day training course and pass a multiple choice examination. • Accept BRE Global’s terms and conditions • Apply for a Auditor Licence • For the latest available courses please visit http://www.breeam.org/events.jsp
BREEAM In-Use international • Currently international users can gain an baseline score and report. • There are 20 questions in the BREEAM In-Use question set that are specific to England, Wales and Northern Ireland. • Currently engaging with international partners to develop a international core question set which will allow: • Comparability • Energy modulator
National Scheme Operators and Scheme Agents • National scheme operators (NSOs) • Countries licensed to administrate BREEAM In-Use in their country and local language inc additional questions to reflect local conditions and regulations • BREEAM NL • Scheme agents • licensed organisations working in the same way as the current NSOs. Scheme remains the full property of BRE Global but with no additional questions to the question set.
Where is BREEAM In-Use today? • Over a 1000 assets registered • Almost half of the registered assets have been certificated. • 85% of existing clients are renewing their BREEAM In-Use certificates and making significant asset improvements. • 143 licensed auditors • New National Scheme Operators (NSOs)
