GEPC Overview & Accomplishments Note, some items have not been updated Recent Conference Performance Accomplishments Hosted panel and technical sessions at ASM 2011 Hawaii Conference 2011 JPC 2011 ASM 2012 • Increased membership 24% • Held over 9 panel and technical sessions • Coordinated conference technical sessions • Contributed to public policy key issues and information papers • Supported CVD briefing sessions • Supported K-12 STEM activities including “Engineers as Educators” and “Ask Polaris” • Developed PC website • Submitted annual report • Authored 2010 Year in review article • Special session at ASM to recognize the AIAA Robert M. Losey Award recipient Issues / Help Needed • Established the organizational structure and subcommittees but still need succession plan • Place ALL members in a position • Would like to explore group funding for a one-time purchase of committee shirts Initiatives & Plans • Create a “Green” track, better integrate with conferences, and support conference planning & coordination • Continue to build out the overall committee and subcommittee leadership, and identify additional liaisons • AA articles • Four committee meetings scheduled for 2012 (ASM, JPC, and two telecons) Financial Status and Other Activities • Current balance: $0 • Spending has been limited to meeting dinners.
Meeting Notes (1) • Meeting was held at 7 PM on Tuesday July 31st • Jason was called away on urgent business and was unable to attend • Ashwani Gupta (P&E Leader) attended and said that the PC was doing a “great job” and that “Jason had done a champion job”. Ashwani discussed the new event model for conferences and said the GEPC should define its conference affiliations. For now, all agreed we should continue to align with ASM (Jan) and JPC (mid-summer) and consider others, as the GEPC integrates across aviation and space as well. • Visitors from the AIAA Program Committee (Director and Assistant Director) also attended and expressed they were pleased with the GEPC’s progress • We did an “around the room” to allow everyone to introduce themselves. There were many new faces with 19 total attending. • There is a LENR (Low Energy Nuclear Reactor) session at ASM 2013 • Dan Jensen can liaison with the Emerging Technologies Committee • Valerie is supporting IEEE Energy Tech 2013 and 2014 in Cleveland and is encouraging attendance. In 2014, the conference will be co-located with the with the AIAA JPC/IECEC • Rich Wahls gave the conference report • ASM 2013 will have 4 special GEPC sponsored or co-sponsored session - JPC 2012 has 2 • We will attend Jan R&T and summer JPC conferences and then look at how to cover the Aviation conference
Meeting Notes (2) • Nathan Hicks will be the “Webmaster” for the GEPC Sharepoint site. He will put the roster on the sharepoint site. Marty or Valerie to check with Betty to make sure Nathan has proper edit privileges • Marty gave a membership report (charts follow) • Ruben Del Rosario will liaison with FAA CLEEN and the Energy Optimized Aircraft Systems TC • It was suggested that Publications/Communications have 2 leads or be split as it is a lot of work. We have to do the Sharepoint and also the year in review article which needs to be done near the end of the summer. • EssamKhalil is our Education Chair • It was suggested that Ian Halliwell could Liaison with IGTI • Dan Jensen is on the AIAA Public Policy committee and will work with Jason as liaison to GEPC • Marty gave a liaison report for items he did or knew about (charts follow) • Marty volunteered to investigate doing a “Webinar” 90 minute lecture on the “Subsonic Ultra Green Aircraft Research (SUGAR) Phase I and Phase II Study Results”. Would be jointly sponsored by GEPC and the Gas Turbine Engine TC. • If a Webinar is conducted, $250 could be paid to the author. Other topics from the PC should be considered. • Marty has worked with the Aircraft Design TC to get a Green Aviation topic as the next student design competition (see chart). Rhett Jefferies from FAA is also sponsoring a similar design competition for a 50 passenger regional airliner. • A telecon will be set up for the next meeting • Meeting was completed about 8:30 PM

Green Engineering PC – Liaison Report Student Design Competition: “Design of a 2030 Regional Airliner Considering Hybrid Electric Propulsion” – RFP submitted to Aircraft Design TC – Marty Bradley DRAFT 2012-2013 AIAA Foundation Undergraduate Team Aircraft Competition VI. REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL Design of a 2030 Regional Airliner Considering Hybrid Electric Propulsion Background: Fuel consumption of ground vehicles can be reduced with plug-in hybrid propulsion, where both petroleum and electricity is stored on the vehicle. This has been enabled by recent advancements in battery technology, but it hasn’t reached a level where enough energy per pound can be stored for commercial airliners to get a similar benefit. However, batteries have been improving rapidly, and may reach a point where they can be useful on aircraft, especially for short missions. Recent NASA funded research into technologies for commercial aircraft in the 2030-2035 timeframe has identified hybrid electric propulsion as a potentially “game-changing” technology. A hybrid propulsion system combines the best features of gas turbine (high thrust/weight, high energy density Jet-A fuel) with the best features of electric propulsion (high efficiency over a wide range of operating speeds, no local emissions, potentially lower noise). Airliners typically fly much shorter ranges than their maximum range capability. Especially at these shorter ranges, electric propulsion has a greater potential benefit. Hybrid propulsion, where some of the energy stored on the aircraft is jet fuel, and some is electricity in batteries, can allow aircraft to efficiently fly a wide range of missions, by varying the ratio of electrical energy (batteries) to chemical energy (jet fuel) loaded on the aircraft. 16 16
