  8. Sydney Region Content Pre-positioning Cache devices (CPC)-1- • Blackbox devices - to be installed by SRITSU School Support commencing this term. No keyboard mouse or monitor required. • No school management required • The device provides: • Cache of Learning Federation Objects • Altiris Packages Share • And can provide if required: • DNS • DHCP • WSUS/SAV

  9. Sydney Region Content Pre-positioning Cache devices-2- DELL PowerEdge 830 Mid-Tower Case Height: 43.90 cm Width: 19.80 cm Depth: 50.00 cm Weight: 19.05 kg (fully loaded)

  10. Sydney Region Content Pre-positioning Cache devices-3- • In preparation for the delivery and the installation of the CPC, schools are requested to: • Determine a suitable location for the device near the campus distributor at the centre of the schools network • This should provide the device with a secure, ventilated and powered location with connectivity to the central switch. • There are two network cards in the CPC device requiring two network connections to your switch. • For maximum performance the device requires connection to a switch rather than a hub. Optimum performance can be achieved through connection via gigabit copper ports to the main switch (if available).

  11. Sydney Region OASIS Continuity (Thin Client Project)

  12. Sydney Region OASIS Thin Client Project Background • Current OASIS Servers are 7 years old and run Novell Netware 4.11 • They are dying across the state • At any one time up to 5% of OASIS servers are not functioning • Something needs to be done in a hurry

  13. Sydney Region OASIS Thin Client Project The Ultimate Goal To totally replace OASIS with a brand new School Management System This is part of the DET Learning Management Business Reforms (LMBR) project LMBR commences planning in July this year The new school management system is expected in 2009 The Interim Solution Obviously, OASIS needs to be kept alive The original plan was to replace all servers with new ones running Netware 6.5 This would mean 2,200+ servers This plan has been shelved for now… …welcome OASIS Thin Client.

  14. Sydney Region OASIS Thin Client Project Where to from here in our Region? • OASIS Thin-Client will be trialed in 20 schools in Sydney Region (already selected) • The trial will commence in August (yes, this year) • There will be extensive testing and debugging during the one-month trial • General rollout to commence in September, but will be halted during rollover periods • 10 schools per week, to complete by mid-2007

  15. Sydney Region OASIS Thin Client Project OASIS Admin/Finance Changes Cash Register Printer and Till will need to move to a Windows PC Excel Cashflow can now be done on the same PC at the same time as OASIS is operating OASIS Word will disappear as there are problems with it under thin-client – use MS Word instead

  16. Sydney Region OASIS Thin Client Project OASIS Library Changes If your school uses ALICE, you will probably be upgraded to OLIVER – a browser-based version of Library Everyone else will use thin-client OASIS Library which is the same as now Old Circulation and Enquiry Terminals will need to be replaced with Windows It is expected that a “Circulation” and “Enquiry” DET User ID will be created so Librarians do not logon as themselves on these computers – (security risk)

  17. Sydney Region OASIS Thin Client Project The Scope of the Old PCs Problem In March, SR IT staff visited EVERY school to determine the size of the “old PCs” problem We determined a shortfall of about 700 PCs across the Sydney Region, most were in Libraries rather than Admin If there is a “Technology 4 Admin” program, it will only replace Admin and Library “office” PCs, not Enquiry terminals

  18. Sydney Region OASIS Thin Client Project What About GProxy (Sentral)? • 1,100+ schools now use GProxy servers • Commitment has been made by ITD to ensure GProxy servers continue to function and provide: • Library and Admin Enquiry via web browser • Other Gproxy functions with links to OASIS • GProxy will continue to work even if Internet links are down. This is a problem for the OASIS Thin Client project in general.

  19. Sydney Region OASIS Thin Client Project What About Other 3rd Party Systems? • Systems: • Swipe card attendance systems • Timetabling • Academic Reporting • SMS Alert systems • Custom School programs • Solutions: • These were also surveyed and the scope of the problem determined • Any program that uses an export from OASIS via a report will continue to work, except you are not restricted to using floppies as in the past

  20. Sydney Region Change to reserved IP address range in schools • In the past the Information Technology Directorate (ITD) has reserved IP addresses in school for ITD and school network infrastructure. This was in the range of 1-30 of the school address range of 1-254. • This has now change. • In the future ITD will reserve the range 1-50. This may mean that schools will have to adjust their address range or reconfigure some network devices. • Check your DHCP Range to ensure it now starts at 51 • Check for “static” devices in the range 31-50 and move them

  21. Sydney Region Really Big Survey The Information Technology Directorate aims to document many aspects of school ICT infrastructure. It is envisaged that this will require a visit to every school (228) in 2006 to document everything to do with ICT. This information can then be updated, providing current and accurate information on school networks. More information on the Really Big Survey will be provided when it’s announced.

  22. Sydney Region Windows servers in schools-1- For all Windows servers owned by the school, each school should ensure it obtains the necessary Microsoft license and media for these servers from Software Services. If the servers are owned by the Region and are being placed in schools as a project, then the Region has purchased the licenses for these servers as part of the project (i.e. CPC servers). The second and subsequent server licenses attract an additional cost and must be purchased from Software Services.

  23. Sydney Region Windows servers in schools-2- Schools will have to apply for these 'no cost' licenses from Software Services in order to update the records in our database. Media for these server software can be purchased from Software Services. With ISA (Web server) Server Standard, if the server has more than 1 processor, licenses will have to be purchased for the second and subsequent processors. Some of the T4L vendors do pre-install Windows Server 2003 Standard on servers from DET supplied media, as a courtesy, when requested by the school. The school must then ensure that licenses for these Windows servers are obtained from Software Services.  Current pricing for the second Windows server 2003 is $148 + GST and $35 + GST for media.
