The BVC(The British Vacuum Council) What is it ? and What does it do ?
The BVC – its remit The British Vacuum Council is a registered charity which is charged with representing, at an international level, the professional interests of scientists and engineers in Great Britain who work in fields related to vacuum. It carries out this function by acting as an umbrella body for those professional and learned societies which have members working in such field. These societies are then the institutional members of the Council.
A Little History The British Vacuum Council (BVC) came into existence in 1959, under the original name of the Joint British Committee for Vacuum Science and Technology (JBCVST). In April 1969 the name was changed to the British Vacuum Council and in November 1985, it was accepted as a registered charity under UK law (Reg No 292999)
BVC Members The Members of Council are its Officers, elected at the Annual Meeting of the Council and two representatives nominated by each institutional member. The British Vacuum Council is the representative of Great Britain on the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and its Applications (IUVSTA). The original members of the BVC • The Institute of Physics and the Physical Society • The Institution of Electrical Engineers • The Royal Society of Chemistry • The Institute of Metals • The Institute of Petroleum • The Institute of Chemical Engineers
Current Members The Institute of Physics (IoP) and the UK Surface Analysis Forum (UKSAF) Vacuum Sypmposium (incorporating The RGA Users Group) are ‘Associate Members’
The BVC within IUVSTA The British Vacuum Council (BVC) is the representative for Great Britain on the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications (IUVSTA). As such it has a role to stimulate international collaboration in the fields of vacuum science, techniques and applications and related multi-disciplinary topics including solid-vacuum and other interfaces.
The BVC within IUVSTA The BVC nominates a Councillor and Alternate Councillor for periods of three years. It also nominates representatives to each Divisional College of IUVSTA, for periods of three years. The Councillor, Alternate and Divisional Representatives are coopted automatically as non-voting members of Council The Council has no individual members
