STAAR & SSI • STAAR stands for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness • STAAR is administered to students in grades 3-8 • In 3rd grade, students take STAAR in math and reading • In 4th grade, students take STAAR in math, reading, and writing • In 5th grade, students take STAAR in math, reading, and science

  3. What is SSI? • SSI stands for Student Success Initiative • SSI applies to students in grades 5 and 8 who take STAAR and STAAR Modified mathematics and reading assessments • SSI does NOT apply to English language learners (ELLs) in grades 5 and 8 who are eligible to take a STAAR L assessment

SSI Continued • Students will have three testing opportunities: beginning of April, middle of May, and end of June. • To meet SSI promotion requirements, students must meet the Phase-in 1 Level II standard in both reading and mathematics. • In order to be placed/promoted by the Grade Placement Committee (GPC), students must participate in all required accelerated instruction (summer school).

SSI Information • Galena Park ISD will be receiving more information from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) regarding SSI. • All information received will be shared with parents of 5th grade students. Items scheduled to be received are: • the SSI parent brochure (in English and Spanish), which has been combined for 5th and 8th grades to simplify distribution • More information regarding SSI will be posted to TEA’s website (Student Assessment Division) soon

  7. STAAR testing dates • April 2-3, 2013 - 1st Round of 5th Grade Math & Reading • May 14-15, 2013 - 2nd Round of 5th Grade Math & Reading • June 25-26, 2013 - 3rd Round of 5th Grade Math & Reading
