The Community College Jigsaw Initiative Kingsborough College in NYC submitted a proposal to the Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE) because of their own efforts in redesigning their institution to better their retention and graduation rates. The goal of the project was to improve the retention and graduation rates of community colleges by articulating a comprehensive, flexible and adaptable model for institutional redesign. They chose four community colleges to help them implement a model on their campuses. Grossmont College was one of the schools chosen.

  5. Conference GC sent 12 representatives to Kingsborough College in July, 2011 to begin work on the action plan.   6. GC Action Plan GC’s focus was to develop a cost effective approach that will allow it to “scale” the most promising elements of practices currently in place of smaller initiatives that have demonstrated success.

The Roadmap Summer 2011: • Beginning April 25th through June 4th, the Counseling Department offered an early admission opportunity program (EAO) • 428 new high school grads were given priority registration Fall 2011 • Offer EAO students who did not take English 98 in the Fall to participate in pilot program in Spring 2012. Two learning communities with counseling links • Orient students and enroll them in learning communities Spring 2012 • Pilot program with EAO students • Work on summer orientations Summer 2012 • Offer full matriculation to new students • Enroll students in 6 linked learning communities
