Mission To provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities To give continuing opportunities to: Develop physical fitness Demonstrate courage Experience joy
History • 1960’s- Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a day camp for individuals with intellectual disabilities • 1968- First International Games were held in Chicago, IL. 1,000 athletes participated • Today- Nearly 1 Million athletes train and compete in more than 140 countries
Impact • Special Olympics has a direct and positive effect on the self-image of participating athletes and their ability to function in a social setting • Special Olympics athletes perform better at school, at work, and at home the longer they participate in the program
The Fall Festival • Villanova University has been the official host of the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Fall State Games for over 20 years • The Special Olympics Fall Festival at Villanova is currently the largest student-run Special Olympics event in the world

Volunteer Roles • Work at a competition venue • Bocce • Long Distance Running • Power Lifting • Roller Skating • Soccer • Volleyball • Help deliver and set up equipment at events • Assist athletes and coaches at local hotels
Volunteer Roles • Ensure the safety of participants • Provide medical support at events • Prepare and serve food to participants
Most Important Role… Enjoy meeting many exciting athletes, coaches and volunteers!
Volunteer Guidelines • Refer to all competitors as athletes • Talk with athletes the same way you would with anyone else • Encourage appropriate behavior
Volunteer Check-in • Volunteer check-in is located at the Jake Nevin Field House, which is adjacent to the Pavilion and the football stadium. Its entrance faces Lancaster.
Reminders • A form of ID is required to volunteer • Volunteers under the age of 16 must accompanied by an adult • Meal vouchers will be provided to off-campus volunteers staying for more than 5 hours
