Elos The Elos project is a Dutch initiative but a European project
Supported by the European Commission and national institutions and authorities
Involved are • Expert organisations and school networks from 11 European countries • Secondary general schools • Students aged 12 – 19 • Teachers • Management staff
Elos offers high quality education • Schools integrate a ‘European and International Orientation’ (EIO) in lessons and exchange activities • Schools prepare students for their roles as European citizens
General Aim • Students (and teachers) acquire competences that are relevant across Europe
‘Key Competences’such as • The student can speak and write critically about the process of European integration.
Which includes knowledge, skills and attitudes • E.g.: The student knows how European institutions function. The student takes part in a simulation game (such as the European Youth Parliament. The student defends her/his personal opinion in a debate about how democratic the EU is.
The Elos project will develop a framework of all key competences,suitable activities and materials to realize them, andassessment instruments (e.g. a portfolio and tests).
Implementation • Basic EIO programme for all students in the age ranges 12 – 15 and 16 – 19 (depending on school type) • Choice of specific ‘stream’ in upper secondary education for age range (approx.) 16 – 19
Implementation ‘Stream’ possibilities: • European and International Orientation Plus deepens the basis • European Vocational Orientation prepares students (often at lower educational levels) for work reality in Europe • Science and Technology stresses the European and international perspective in this subject area
Implementation • Structural international activities with several schools abroad • At least one of these partner schools should also implement Elos
A range of activities for students: Learning in virtual and face-to-face exchanges, European modules at school, internships abroad, etc.
IT also for teachers! • Use of communication platform from 2006 on: www.elos.eu • Downloadable: Materials, good practices, curriculum suggestions
More support for schools: • In-service training for teachers • School partner finding • Advise on how to set up Comenius 1 projects • Network meetings • Lobbying for extra opportunities within the new European programmes
Certification Hard work will be rewarded! • Elos school certificate • Based on: a common standard and a visitation procedure • Student certificate • Based on: student portfolio and examination of key competences
