  2. Simile • Comparing using like or as • Ex: His wits are as sharp as a knife. • Ex: I feel like a million dollars.

  3. Metaphor • Comparing two things without using like or as • Ex: Her clothes are as messy as my room. • Ex. She is a needle in the haystack.

  4. Hyperbole • Using exaggeration to make a point • Ex: The teacher gave us a mile of homework. • Ex. He was as tall as a pine tree.

  5. Onomatopoeia • Sound words • Ex: The gun went kapow! • Ex: The bomb went boom!

  6. Alliteration • Repetition of beginning sounds • Ex. The big blackberry burst. • Ex. She sells sea shells by sea shore.

  7. Personification • Giving human qualities to something not human • Ex: The rock hopped down the hill during the earthquake. • Ex. The plastic bag danced across the road.

  8. Idiom • A well known expression that does not mean what it says. • Ex. Johnny said, “Don’t shoot yourself in the foot.” • Ex. Mom said to me, “Don’t change your spots for stripes.”
