many real life interference examples….. • …. not known to public • Christian Verholt, chairman of CENELEC: ‘The costs of EMC are 2 to 5 % of the total hardware development costs, if carried out properly.’ ‘But if EMC is not taken into account, the costs are much higher, growing above 10 %’ • Appr. 1500 EM interference standards exist now, and more to come, most of them related to sectors • We need a harmonised horizontal, and not a vertical sectoral, approach Standards & Interoperability in ICT European Technology Platforms, ETSI, 23-24 october 2006

Energy and exposure • Often system designed for singular environment. • But: due to plethora of electronic systems everywhere: many unwanted emissions and thus high noise level. • Noise levels 20 dB upto 60 dB compared to >10 years before • Consequences: • Interference issues (German Toll project), thus • Increased levels of transmission power, thus • More interference problems in other systems, etc. • and discussions on human exposure and health etc. Standards & Interoperability in ICT European Technology Platforms, ETSI, 23-24 october 2006
